From Virgin Australia

Mr McGirr pointed out that he works as a fireman in Newtown in Sydney and was trusted in his job to look out for the welfare of children.

"(The attitude of the airline) is 'we respect you but as soon as you board a Virgin airline you are a potential paedophile', and that strips away all the good that any male does regardless of his standing in society, his profession or his moral attitudes," he said.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Australia confirmed the policy and said while they didn't want to offend male passengers, their priority was the safety of children.

That's fairly insulting, isn't it?

I've sat next to a child on a flight to Australia. Although to be fair he was accompanied and well behaved. I'd've gladly swapped seats.

not really the point, though, is it?

The irony is that if they had their shit in order, no one would even notice this policy. Adults accompanying children would be seated with them, and if there were children on the flight then the check-in system wouldn't seat adults next to them. If this implied a cost overhead that would be reflected in ticket prices.

The fact that they've been separating parents from their children, and demanding that passengers move after they've been seated is just proof of their glaring administrative incompetence.

On the other hand, I actually think Virgin are somewhat deserving of praise for agreeing to carry unaccompanied minors as passengers, a service which some other airlines (eg Jetstar, their competitor in the cheap flight stakes) don't offer. I know a divorced couple who send their child unaccompanied from Perth ←→ Melbourne fairly often and they need this option.

yeah, i have no problem with the flight of unaccompanied minors, or even moving all adults away from them. but targeting males is just kinda discriminatory in this way.
