Perhaps it doesn't make me the best person, but I have long held the belief that the Pope, and the little force of Cardinals that surround him, have been out of touch with modern society, and have become a force that actually causes nothing but harm on the world. Their opinions on female priests, on homosexuality, abortion, the wealth they horde, the poverty they support... I had actually thought that I'd moved beyond the point where I would stop and watch the Vatican burn itself to the ground, but I guess I haven't. I hunt down stories, I watch interviews, I cannot turn away. Last night I saw a good interview on Dateline with Father Tom Doyle, a priest dedicated to helping victims of the systematic abuse of other priests in the church.
Check the link. It's worth watching.
Otherwise, here's your Easter quote, which has a Cardinal explaining the whole thing:
During Easter Mass in St Peter's Square, Cardinal Sodano expressed solidarity with the Pope, who has himself come under scrutiny for his role in handling past cases of abuse.
"Holy Father, the people of God are with you and will not let themselves be influenced by the petty gossip of the moment, by the trials that sometimes assail the community of believers," the cardinal said.
His remarks echoed comments made a week earlier by Pope Benedict.
With the Church already under pressure over the abuse allegations, the Pope said his faith would help give him the courage to deflect "petty gossip".
