That's the official trailer for Watchmen. It has a Smashing Pumpkins song.

Personally, there's not much to say about it: it's a mash up of images that has the same feel as 300 did, and that film was pretty goddamn awful, not to mention racist. I notice that Asian people are being blown apart and killed. Sure, it's in the original text, but I'm just planting seeds, planting seeds. What it does bring to mind, however, is just how poorly previous Alan Moore written projects have been turned into films. V for Vendetta missed the point, From Hell was a shadow of its intelligence, and The League of Extradordinary Gentlemen was a shadow of a film.

Maybe I'm just cool if none of this stuff becomes a film.

You're right that the movie adaptations of Moore's work have been pretty flawed (or worse than flawed, in the case of League) but still, I'm hoping against hope that Watchmen will be the one that gets it right. At least the trailer looks reasonably true to the book.

Did you see the Simpsons episode where Moore appeared at a comic store signing and flew into a rage at the mention of
"Watchmen Babies in V for Vacation"

nah, i never saw the simpsons episode. gotta admit, i haven't seen a new one for some time now.

From Hell was a shockingly bad adaptation of Alan Moore, but it was a fantastic adaptation of Eddie Campbell's art. LXG didn't even get the visual aesthetic right.

I hated 300 an awful lot, and must admit I'm not looking forward to Watchmen at all.

the visuals of FROM HELL were nice, yeah, but that didn't change the fact that it wasn't a very good film (even ignoring the source material).

i may just skip WATCHMEN.

V For Vendetta at least bore some relation to the original. I liked the imprisonment/finding the diary/release sequence, which they played almost completely straight, and which to me was the heart of the book, so I'll cut them some slack for that. But they certainly gutted the politics, trying hard to change V from a murderous anarchist terrorist to a really pissed off liberal.

From Hell seemed to be very faithful to Eddie Campbells art, but entirely twist the story into something completely different. They turned it into a whodunnit, which meant Gull really only directly took centre stage at the end, whereas the original is, of course, all about Gull and his demented internal world. A very silly adaptation that made for a poor film.

And the League - well, I barely even think of it as related to the comic.

I find the trailer a bit disconcerting - the visuals are, perhaps, too good. Coming from the guy who created 300, I had no doubt that he was capable of translating the visuals of the comic to the screen, and it looks like he has done a very good job of that. But the trailer gives me no reason to think that he has done any more than that. I'm much more interested in whether we get the direction and acting to make Rorschachs vicious nihilistic sociopathy work, and still have the have some sympathy for his position at the end, and so on.

I still think Watchmen is too dense a text for someone to turn it into a movie. If it'd been a 12-part HBO miniseries, with 45 minutes devoted to each issue, it could be do-able.

I am of course perfectly prepared to be proven utterly wrong come March, but until then I am highly doubtful they can pull it off.

perhaps the thing about the trailer that sits wrong about me is dan, the owl. he appears to be quite fit, y'know? and there's all this emphasis on the costumes, when i thought, really, the point wasn't really them at all.

still, who knows.

Yeah, it's probably gonna suck... at least our expectations will be low... would be hard to be worse than League...
Jul. 18th, 2008 08:29 am (UTC)
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome that trailer is.
Jul. 18th, 2008 10:03 am (UTC)
It's not just a Smashing Pumpkins song, it's the BATMAN Smashing Pumpkins song, heh.

Part of me is very frightened. Part of me is very hopeful.

a reused smashing pumpkins song, hey? classy.
Jul. 18th, 2008 10:28 am (UTC)
I hope you're cool with seeing all of it become film, because that's the reality...

Frankly, I don't feel any especial perversion will have been committed if Snyder rapes Watchmen, because all Watchmen is is pop psuedo intellectual fodder that makes comic book geeks feel good about themselves, That's why I don't have a problem with seeing it. But it's gonna suck for the simple fact that you can't cram that graphic novel into a two hour movie and come out with an intelligible narrative. You're gonna have to lose huge chucks of story, and given Snyder's propensities, you know he's gonna lay on the--that's what the groundlings want and that's what he'll give them. If this satisfies the hardcore comic freaks, I'll eat a copy of the DVD.

i think part of the prob for me is that they won't be able to cram it all in there, so it'll just come out as this pale shadow to the original--so, like, why bother making it, y'know? if you know it's going to be a lesser creature from the start, kinda defeats the purpose.

think i may just skip it, hey?
Jul. 20th, 2008 02:03 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm with you. I may sneak a peek on DVD, but then again I may not. Or I may have to review it...echh!
Jul. 18th, 2008 10:28 am (UTC)
"Visionary" is an interesting choice of description.
Jul. 18th, 2008 10:31 am (UTC)
Yeah, the visionary Zack Snyder. Makes you stop and ponder.
Jul. 18th, 2008 11:09 am (UTC)
Looks good to me.
Jul. 20th, 2008 01:46 am (UTC)
heathen ;p
Jul. 18th, 2008 03:06 pm (UTC)
Alas, I already plan to pass on this movie. Meh. It made a great graphic novel, but does it need to be a movie? Nope.
Jul. 20th, 2008 01:46 am (UTC)
yeah, think i may be with you. i read the book, no need to see the flick.

In AD 2009 war was beginning...

I hope it isn't a jingo-tastic historically inaccurate, homophobic, droll, muddle 300 was...

300 could have been so cool...

Sin City was.

I liked From Hell, but then again I didn't know what the source material for it was until after I saw the film.

I mentally blocked tLoEG.
