Jeff Ford on Black Sheep

Jeff Ford (14theditch) has his best of 2007 book list at the Aqueduct blog, and Black Sheep is listed:

Black Sheep by Ben Peek, a first novel from an Australian writer, is a dystopian tale with a great irony at its heart. At one and the same time, it is about the loss of identity at the hands of a totalitarian racial protocol but also, and more importantly, a journey of self-discovery for the protagonist, Isao. Peek’s got a good, clear, writing style. Looking forward to seeing further books from him.

Nice, hey?

It's still sitting on the bedside table at my hotel. I haven't quite finished The Stars My Destination yet, but if it doesn't pick up a bit it might be going out the window anyway...

Woo, Black Sheep. I still keep seeing the movie adaptation on posters in London, too...

i find THE STARS MY DESTINATION slow, myself. i really liked THE DEMOLISHED MAN, but barely made it through the one everyone stands behind.

that film was very faithful to my book ;)

I'm not connecting with it. Maybe I'm expecting too much, having last read Mother Night (which I highly recommend, by the way - I think it's Vonnegut that you'd dig in particular).

It's not a big read, so I figure I'll finish The Stars My Destination. I bought it mostly 'cos these Gollancz SF books are damn sexy... and, of course, have generally been great so far.

destination has a good rep, though. that's why i bought it (though i prefer it's original title, TYGER TYGER, and i'm not sure why it got changed...)

i do plan to read the vonnegut. i plan to read more of everything. it's my new year's resolution.

A nice taster here! The film (with Nick Nolte) is very good, actually. Arguably the best adaptation of Vonnegut's work, I am told, and using the original dialogue which is vital in any movie of his work.

Have you read much Matheson?

nah, just I AM LEGEND. the last line is the best thing about it, but otherwise...

... which is why I argue that the film doesn't deserve the name, from what I've heard.

I liked the book, but it's the final pages that make it.

yeah, i've heard the same thing.
