For everyone who doesn't give a shit about the drama, I give you a very out of tune Scarlet Johansson with the Jesus and Mary Chain. Apparently she's making an album.

As far as I'm concerned, she has exquisite taste. I think singing Just Like Honey on stage with the Jesus and Mary Chain has been my secret ambition since I was about 14.

(the band have had their ups and downs, and mostly downs, but Psychocandy was something special)

well, while i do agree that she has fine music taste, she's still out of tune :P

my favourite album is DARKLANDS.

And out of focus by the look of the still on the front.

She could be big if she went in for spoken word - maybe she could tour with Henry Rollins. ;-)

Given a choice between in tune and perfect taste, taste wins. Perfectly in tune bland pop is something we have in oversupply (largely thanks to AutoTune, but still -- AutoTune can help people with good and bad taste into tune, but taste cannot be automated). Its especially the case when you are working in that particular aesthetic (look at bands like the Pastels, for example).

Darklands was a fine album, but Psychocandy was the one that made the band and was massively influential. It may be one of those 'have to be there' things -- it was the core of a whole movement at the time, looking back its value is a bit obscured by the other bands that took similar ideas and ran with them further (My Bloody Valentine, for example).

The Mary Chain/ Creation label axis of late 80s/early 90s music is one of those topics on which I can quickly descend into anorak wearing nerdiness -- much of my late teenage years was spent obsessing on the topic. Though my brother leaves me for dead in that respect.

(recommended for those as nerdy as me on the topic - the book about Creation and Alan McGee My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry For The Prize
