Words from the City

I went and saw the documentary Words from the City on Friday night because I had a gig to review it. The big disappointment of the night was that the producer never organised me a media pass and I considered fucking off to watch another movie, but I have to admit, I was curious about it, so I paid the fifteen fifty and went in with an open mind. I'm writing the review up today. You'll note how I'm not recommending the film to you.

This photo is taken from the after party, which featured some of the artists performing. This is Wire and Choo Choo, if I remember the latter's name right. I had to pay to get into this, too, but at the very least, the music was cool.

On a completely unrelated note, I just bought both your novels via the wonders of Amazon. Due to a quirk of shipping I won't be getting them until September, but I'm looking forward to them (and owning some of the A-man's typre writer art)

Re: Books
that's cool, man. i hope--when you get 'em--that you dig them.

Bummer. I had a free pass you could've had too! And I didn't go did I? ;) Hope you justify my absence.
We did see Planet B-Boy at the start of the week, and that was rad!

I will be ordering Black Sheep (or BLACK SHEEP, as authors tend to refer to their books in all caps I've noticed) from Amazon later this week, when one other thing becomes available. Bonzer!

heh. was there any particular reason you didn't go? i can't imagine anyone connected to the music scene would see this as any kind of comprehensive look at hip hop.

that's cool on the book, man. as for the capitals vs italics? capitals are easier :)

Yes, capitals are easier - except on the eye, so to speak ;)
I didn't go because I am a lazy-ass, frankly. I didn't have anything specific on that night either, but couldn't be farked. Just didn't really interest me, even though I'm friends with the Herd guys and somewhat interested in Oz hip-hop - there's enough of it I like. Buit the scene itself, I guess, I'm not that interested in...

it was a very limited view of the scene, at least to my knowledge, with a very limited view of hip hop. i'm no expert on it--i'm pretty much like you. there's enough of it i like, and i own some albums, all good.

it was a bit of a shame the herd weren't in it.

How about Curse ov Dialect?
If no Herd or Curse ov Dialect then it sux0rs ;)

the artists are koolism, maya jupiter, mc trey, wire, hilltop hoods, TZU, downzide (i'm spelling that wrong, i know), and layla. there's more, but they're the mains.
Jun. 25th, 2007 10:23 am (UTC)
Yeah ok boring. I kinda like Hilltop Hoods for the stoopidnez, and TZU, but the rest (I think it's Downsyde?) don't really do it for me anyway, and there would probably have been too much of fucking Heidi Pasqual and the Creative Vibes people... (maybe)
Jun. 25th, 2007 10:29 am (UTC)
they sound familiar, but it's not much, if they're there. it's a ninety minute film--it's a bit of a barrage of names at times, to be perfectly honest.

yeah, i think it is downsyde.

the problem with the choices is, near as i can tell, they've been made to further this image of hip hop as a kind of outsider, working class music. it's not really about their music at all.

(i don't mind the latest hilltop hoods album.)

Can you claim expenses?
Jun. 25th, 2007 09:34 am (UTC)
who knows. kinda doubt it.
