How the Dead Dream, Lydia Millet

Lydia Millet will have a new book out in August. It is called How the Dead Dream.

What is it about?

I have no idea.

Is that really the cover?

Probably not.

Isn't August a long time away?

Shut the fuck up.

I don't understand this. Don't you usually talk about books near release?

There's no rule for this. I'm surprised it's still going. You know, blog traffic has jumped since I been doing this. Not that it's related or nothing. I'm just saying. Jump

You're not even talking about the book you egomaniac!

Oh Pure and Radiant Heart was so fucking good that Millet gets bought blind. It doesn't fucking matter what she's writing about. I'm there. I'm a genius. Everyone should fucking do what I say and be there with me.

So, do what the voices in my head say.

Re: Listening to your voices
A different view. (In fact the response to the book being shortlisted has been almost entirely negative, at least in my hearing.)

Re: Listening to your voices

well, you know how people are: everyone has a different taste bud. i thought it was brilliant, myself. that there are people who don't like it out there just make me a little happier. books that divide are usually more interesting. personally, i find harrison to be as boring as people say he is fantastic. goes to show, huh?

Hey, I'm one of the judges that shortlisted it, so I think it's one of the six best sf novels published in the UK last year. I've just been surprised how few people agree with me. :)

Re: Listening to your voices
shit, you're really a judge? i had no idea (shocking, huh?)

i gotta say, i'm not that surprised by the response. millet's book lurks on the edges of the genre, no matter the high concept sell of it (that being time travel). the characters--especially the couple--are portrayed in a very realist fashion, and the book takes on a historical bent as well. mix all those together and i reckon you'll get a solid anti vote in this scene.

Re: Listening to your voices
It was BRILLIANT. Her use of language is amazing. There were sentences she wrote where I just hated her because I knew I would never write anything like that. (I have a different style, I know, but it still makes me bitter. :-p)

I'm really glad you posted about it. I already had George Bush Dark Prince of Love on my wish list but I hadn't heard of Oh Pure and Radiant Heart. George Bush Dark Prince of Love was also quite brilliant, but in an entirely different way, which also makes me hate her a little bit. :-p

How's tricks, Ben? I'm so far behind on my Internets.

That's actually a fairly cool cover, even if it is only a temp cover.
Apr. 18th, 2007 07:46 am (UTC)
it's not bad, yeah, but given the publication date, i seriously doubt it'll be it.
Apr. 18th, 2007 07:46 am (UTC)
My new novel is also out in August.

Just sayin'.
Apr. 18th, 2007 07:47 am (UTC)

Apr. 18th, 2007 07:50 am (UTC)
Can I pay with a bouncing check instead? :D
Apr. 18th, 2007 08:05 am (UTC)
i could start a 'don't take cheques from these authors' list. be a pretty big list, i reckon.
Apr. 18th, 2007 08:09 am (UTC)
Oh, my cheques are usually good --

after the publishers/producers have actually paid me.

authors say that so often it's lost all meaning.

Just wanted to say that, after hearing you and Matthew Cheney going on about Oh Pure and Radiant Heart, I read it and loved it. And now I have my mom reading it.

As far as the cover of How the Dead Dream, I'd say that's probably how it'll look. It's apparently the first volume in a trilogy about extinction, so the image may be appropriate. . .
