Here is a link to a technorati linked collection of African Bloggers and their opinions on Live 8. It's not all negative, but the most interesting comments concern themself with the portrayal of Africa as helpless, how a concert doesn't feed people, and the lack of African musicians invited to take part.

something that no one appears to have really noticed, isn't it?

You know, that whole Live8 thing completely passed me by. I hate that show-off shit.

It's odd, until this weekend Live 8 hadn't really blipped on my radar, but once it did it explained why Geldof was been interviewed a lot on talk shows in the last few months.

did you manage to see the ones where geldof had his head on tony blair's shoulder? that was my favourite.

No, I missed that. The ABC had a doco/series on music and protest recently, and the last ep I saw of that was all about band aid and Bono and Geldof. I remember Bono saying he was no match for politicians, like Putin drawing him into a hug for the cameras and stuff like that.

there is a sense, from bono at least, that he does get his words and intentions twisted by politicians. geldof, however, doesn't give off that sense to me. he's a bit too cuddly with blair, really, and gives that sense that instead of being someone who is there to counter balance the politics of it, he's fallen down onto that side of the equation by becoming friends.

just my opinion, of course.

There's another thing which certainly affects my judgment of Geldof. See, if Bono says "I'm really just a muso" I think "yes he is, and not a bad one at that". Whereas if Geldof says it (as he did on Denton) I think "you had band with one hit single 20 years ago, get over yourself".

I guess the point is that Bono has many ways of being in the limelight, so I can assume that when it comes to politics his intentions are altruistic. Geldof sometimes comes across as an attention seeker.

yeah, i agree.

i mean, until this weekend, i didn't even know geldof had been a musician with any cred. i thought he'd made his name as a producer.
