My story 'R' from Agog! Smashing Stories has been put onto Ellen Datlow's recommended reading list for horror in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror. Just like the other hundred people on the list, I'm pleased that someone read it and liked it.

In case you've never read it, 'R' is the story of a man who wakes up to find that his world has been censored and he has a black square over his genitals. I think of it as a dark comedy, myself, but I'm not fussed where people put things in the genre boundaries these days. In addition to the recommend, the story is up for a Ditmar in Year's Best Short Fiction, and a lot of people have really liked it. Which is cool, as I always believed in the story, and spent four years sending it around to get it into a good market where people would read it. The hard thing these days, I note, is not getting published, but rather to sell your work to good markets that ensures that people will read your work and you can continue to grow and publish at the same time. Like I said, it took me four years, and the story was rejected by basically everyone and their Grandmother before Cat Sparks took a chance on it.

If you're out of Australia and you're curious, you can buy the collection here. If you're in the country, go here.

thank you.

they're nice, but they don't stop you geting the rejections (which still come--i had two this week). they allow you to perserve though, i guess, and if it tips more people into reading, hey, cool. if not, just as cool. better than hate and bile.
