Anansi Boys

The American cover to Neil Gaiman's new novel Anansi Boys is really, really hideous, isn't it?

I don't know about hideous, but it's not pretty.

it's like they tried to force the lightning bolt from AMERICAN GODS into it and damn the results. but mostly, it's the spiderweb that renders it awful. i think this might be a british hardcover kind of book, myself.

I'd say UK covers are generally better than US covers, to be honest, and I think Gaiman says on his blog that this is intended for the US. That said, the picture at the bottom is Piccadilly Circus...

yeah, it is the US one. i don't mind US hardcovers, myself. generally they're as garish as hell for sf and fantasy stuff, but in the small press and outside that genre for the rest, they're usually quite nice. plus, i like the rough edged pages.

plus, i like the rough edged pages.

This is true. I bought the UK editions of the Baroque Cycle, then saw the US editions and wanted to buy them all over again...

The american cover over American Gods wasn't all that brilliant either. In general I prefer UK covers over US covers as well.

Small press tends to go either way.

i liked the american american gods cover. it wasn't anything special, but i thought it worked, colour wise. the green on the british didn't work for me, but i know many who did like it.

that's true about the small press.

I rather like it.

yes, but are you really a trustworthy source of opinion right now?

You think? I kind of like it. I'd like it more if they hadn't done the lightning bolt on American Gods, but as a thing in itself, I think it's fine.

but, you know, i did want to find out if anyone did like it.

The US cover to American Gods made it look like a bad legal novel. The UK cover was this gorgeous, foggy-blue sepia-ish shot of a 50's diner/truckstop. And the little capitalist in me almost forced me to get rid of my US version and buy the prettier UK one but i fought the urge. Funny how much we judge the book by the cover.

i liked the colours of the american version of american gods. when i first saw the foggy blue british one, i was a bit like you, but for some unknown reason just recalling that image now makes me feel ill.

but i'm reasonably sure that a british cover will look much nicer this time round.

with covers, it's no so much that i judge... just that i want it to look nice. i like nice things. though i do wish someone would give me chunks of money so i could buy all those beautiful white covered copies of haruki murakami novels. all my copies are mismatched and odd coloured paperback and hardcover american versions.

though i do admit a certain amount of fondness for those ugly books.
