Jesus and the World of Warcraft.

Friend of mine sent me this. I just can't not share:

"Christian game enthusiasts around the US are turning the world of Azeroth inside the new video game, "World of Warcraft" into a mission field, where virtual battles are fought and real souls are won to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Billy Houston, a Landover Baptist Senior High youth, has been sharing Jesus in the virtual gaming world for over three years... Billy has what gamers call, a Level 57 Undead Priest with Holy Focus. "I'm also in one of the largest Christian guilds on our server," he says. "I think the reason so many people are open to hearing about Jesus in the World of Warcraft is because the majority of people who play the game are lonely kids who don't have any friends. I doubt any of them play sports so you can pretty much guess that there are lots of gay boys and fat little pale-faced Wiccan girls on the servers who hate themselves and escape into virtual characters so they don't have to deal with their pathetic lives. When they hear that someone loves them, even if it is just the Lord Jesus Christ, they always want to hear more!"

Landover Baptist Pastors originally expressed some concern over the game because it looked like it promoted occult activity. "I told Pastor Deacon Fred that every single time I find an item that looks like it has something to do with the occult, I hop on a griffin and head straight to Ironforge where I auction it off. Christian gamers shouldn't be carrying that stuff around.  We don't enter places that serve alcohol in the game either. It is just not a good testimony. All the money I make from selling occult items to unsaved gamers, I auction off on E-bay for real cash, which I then put into the offering plate at our church on the last Sunday of each month."

Landover Baptist the link. (If you've never heard of it, it's a satirical site. Think the Onion of religion.)

wel,l it's not real, so maybe he's not a level 57 undead guy. but still, really, really funny.

Bit of a one-joke site, though, isn't it?

most sites are, really. this one just strikes me as funny--and possibly, in places, a little bit true.

"It is such a rush to kill other players who refuse to accept Jesus Christ as Lord," says one gamer.

As a WOW'er, i know what this is all about. There are guilds of basically fundamentalist fuckheads, 16-20, brimming with effusive Christian glowing gunk, and coming up to me and my entourage of dwarves, night elves, etc, drinking mead in some tavern and, no joke, preaching at us. Christian motherfuckers. Sorry, but nothing ruins an imaginary drinking binge than online evangelists who outnumber you ten to one.

can't you attack them with a sword? i mean, ins't that a valid response in there?

Well i'm a hunter, and as such have a big fuck-off raptor named Barefoot. Not to mention a souped-up flintlock musket the size of a canoe, so we just jangle our weapons and they fuck off. Usually. Occasionally though a skirmish starts, and things get interesting. No one told me that the game involved skirmishes with pre-pubescent jesus freaks. I'da thought that would pull more people in, personally. :D

i got to admit, it's renewed my interest. if only this computer was... well, newer.

Oh, its great. Bear in mind however i have spend $200 on my piece of shit so it'll run the game nominally well, plus the subscription costs. Well worth it, though. I'm leaning engineering and can almost make exploding sheep. Heehee. But yeah, i have a crew i play with whenever i'm on and we pretty much travel into unending caverns, dungeons, swamps etc drunk on cheap ale and having a whale of a time. Good stuff. Oh, and when i hit level 40 i get to buy a steed and ride it around.

On a non-WOW note, i landed a role in an upcoming production of Pulp Fiction on the stage at uni. I'm playing Tim Roth's character, Pumpkin.

that's cool. i can see you as a young tim roth...

anyhow, WOW and my computer. since i've ditched out of tutoring this semester (maybe the year) to finish my thesis, cash is low, so i won't be putting any into this machine. i considered buying a new laptop after the old one shat itself, but it's just going to have to wait. besides, i spent too much time on this thing as it is. i like to crawl away from it occasionally. if only to go into a corner and sleep.
