The Past Three Elections.

from the age.

"The Coalition won government on March 2, 1996, with a landslide 44-seat majority and John Howard replaced Paul Keating as prime minister. In the October 1998 election, fought mainly on the GST, Labor won 50.98 per cent of the two-party preferred vote to the Coalition's 49.02 per cent. But the votes were not in the right seats. In the 2001 election, the Coalition posted a rare result for a government by achieving a swing towards it, with a two-partypreferred vote of just under 51 per cent compared with Labor's 49 per cent."
