Anyhow, I can recommend the Shepard and Holland books from the above list, if you're curious. I haven't read the others. The Shepard is a collection of film reviews, which are a touch more like essays on films, and the culture that supports it, and which are published on ElectricStory. But lets face it: this is mostly about me pimping my book to you. It's about me. Me, I tells you. So take the chance if you haven't.
