Meme of the Day.

seen everywhere, until there was no choice but to answer it myself. assume that friends list means the other people who trip through here on a daily basis.

Name a CD you own that no-one else on your friends list does:

i figure, most likely, that it is kathy acker's spoken word cd Pussy.

the truth is, i've never listened to this cd. i bought it from the states, and the day it arrived, i found that out that acker had died. cancer, if i remember rightly. i like acker's stuff, but with this new awareness, i sat there, looking at the cd, just unwilling to play it. on the disk was, essentially, the words of a dead writer, a writer who i admired a whole heap, and likely the only words i would ever hear her speak. that's the reason i haven't put it in and spun, even now. i guess you'll either understand that, or you won't.

Name a book you own that no-one else on your friends list does:

now, you see, this isn't difficult. i'm hip deep in research and i own all kinds of books about cities, nowadays, and to my knowledge no one who passes through here has that interest.

but the novel i'm going to go with is michael ondaatje's coming through slaughter not because i think ondaatje is an unknown writer, or needs to sell more books, but because this is, in my mind, his best book and i don't known another person who has read it. it's the story of jazz player buddy bolden, his life pieced together in fragments of ondaatje's beautiful prose. it's the book that came along and just opened the world for me, and i reckon more people ought to read it, and i'm always happy to hear that people have. so prove me wrong.

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/etc that no-one else on your friends list does:

i don't know about this one. i don't spend my time tracking down the kind of films that have an audience of one, and my filmic obsessions have strong followers. plus, ashamel is around, and between david and kyla (who make up the name, though it's more david than kyla) i got to admit that i've not their awareness of things. i like films, i got my film hobbies, and i've seen a lot of rare and weird things, and at one stage, i'd seen every new bollywood release at the end of the century. but films i own, that's a different matter.

i'm going to go with orson welles' the trial. i'm a big welles fan, and this is a little film of his you don't see round much.

Name a place that you have visited that no-one else on your friends list has:

the siding spring observatory in the warrumbungle mountains, located outside coonabarabran. when i was a kid, my father had a friend who worked there, and in the holidays, they would take their children (of which i was one) out at obscene hours in the night, crunching over the gravel, and inside. there they'd get the telescope working and show us various planets. i must've seen the solar system before i'd seen a model of the planet, to be honest.

don't know why, but it was the first thing that popped into my head. (i probably been to other places people haven't been. i live in the western suburbs of sydney, after all.) anyhow, maybe you been there, but you got to have been there in the dead of the night to beat me out.
