David Blaine: Reality Boy.

yeah, i'm not sure just what has me fascinated by david blaine either. i've given it some thought, and i figure it stems from the fact that people are calling him an illusionist. sure, he faked cutting off his ear, but that was the party trick--sitting in the plastic box is the main act, the one we pay cash for.

i'm beginning to think that blaine is really the start of the reality magician. in short, he uses reality instead of slight of hand and mind bending illusions, reducing his act to the spectacle of some guy enduring a bit of harsh treatment. it's comparable to watching a big brother, where people go into an isolated house and then try to outlast each other over three or so months.

in other words, it's pathetic.

luckily, i'm not alone in thinking this:

"Since the American began his stunt on Friday he has been pelted with eggs, taunted with the smell of fish and chips and woken up by a man banging a drum.

Police said on Tuesday officers had been called in to deal with one man who was throwing eggs at Blaine's transparent box late on Monday evening.

"The man was given a stern talking to. But he was not arrested," a police spokesman said.

The 30-year-old New Yorker is used to drawing admiring crowds for his other feats in the United States, including being buried alive and encased in a block of ice.

But newspapers said some Londoners were devising ways of breaking the American's spirit, saying they were already bored with his latest challenge.

"We were watching him at home on TV and it was really dull so we thought we would come down and liven things up. I wanted to wake him up," impromptu drummer Shiraz Azam, 21, told London's Evening Standard on monday."

of course, if you ask me, i don't think they're there to admire him. i think the people in london are passing the box and going, 'where's the magic? where's the rabbit out of the hat? is all he going to do is sit in his bloody box? what a wanker.'
