The Quiet American.

i saw the Quiet American last night, though it was wit the lesser of the movie going companions ;)

it's a good movie. michael caine is superb as fowler, the reporter who refuses to take sides, and is in love with a girl he can't keep forever. vietnam is another attraction of the film, with the hot, simmering city taking an important centre piece to the interactions of the three characters. the flaws that the film has come through brendan frasier's pyle, and the political aspect of the film. the two never seem to connect in a solid way, and it leaves you (well, in this case me) wanting a bit more. as the film says, the girl and the politics of vietnam are connected with each other, which works well, if it leaves her (i believe her name is phong but i'm not sure of the spelling) a touch passive.

however, these are quibbles. i don't quite see the big trouble over releasing it to a sensitive american public, as it doesn't paint americans in a bad light, and everyone is shown in solid greys, but then perhaps that is me. it is a good film. it verges on a great film, and is well worth your time and money.
