'It will be at least a decade before Olympic Park is a self sufficient site, the acting director-general of the Olympic Co-ordination Authority admitted yesterday,' which comes from an article written on the 18th of January by stephanie peating and geesche jacobson, titled 'ten year wait forecast until olympic park begins to cover costs.'

oh, that last one was on page eight of the sydney morning herald.

on the 11th of jan, on page three, gerald ryle and joseph kerr joined the fray of reporting and giving us images of olympic park:

'"it would be easy for any of you to go out to the park and take a picture and say 'there is nobody around, this is a while elephant. so do it now, do it every week if you want,' he said." (the he in this case being the premier, bob carr.)

g and j also go on to say that the 'olympic sites [are] to drain [the] tax purse for years.'

which is nice, isn't it?

on the 18th of December, on page three, in the year 2000 now, matthew moore and gerald ryle (are the names familiar yet?) gave us an article called 'the secret millions lost in SuperDome wrangles.'

it's all about money lost, squandered, the misuse of taxpayers, and abigroup this time.

on the same page, matthew moore wrote 'olympic ghost town seeks taxpayer bailout,' in which he painted nice images of desertion and such, which 'yesterday, olympic boulevard was all but deserted.'

perhaps the ghosts of volunteers and the athletes who didn't make it still haunt there.

on the 20th of November, page nine, we learn about what exactly lies beneath the glory of olympic park in 'history's waste turns into a toxic shock for the olympic neighbourhood,' by richard macey.

'laura leonoff lives just a kilometre from the olympic park, the home of the green olympics. but her homebush property is so contaminated with industrial toxins, it has been declared unsuitable for use.'

'metres from land that accommodated a chemical plant for 50 years.'

'suffering severe headaches, allergies and breathing disorders.' (this was the aforementioned ms leonoff.)

there are other articles about the toxicity of olympic park. fantastic, isn't it? reminds me of that simpsons quote, where lisa says the white house was built on a stagnant swamp... or something was built there. maybe congress... i guess i don't remember the quote that well, huh?

on the 29th of jan, 2002, on page two, nadia jamal and anthony dennis wrote and article called 'homes on the olympic site by 2004'.

it didn't have much, except what some of the plans are, like 'for example, colours that complement the "festival nature" of the site will be encouraged.' which leads one to imagine that the reds and yellows and blues will go along lovely with the toxic waste.
