American Chocolate Observation

i was recently shown a place where you can buy american chocolate bars in sydney. it's a little shelf in a cramped convenience store, but it holds all the names advertised to me through american tv: babe ruth, 5th avenue... latent advertising kicked in, and titles like these and others were purchased.

in the end, all i can say is that you americans are being screwed over by your chocolate companies.

And with chocolate biscuits too. I took Tim Tams over last year, and showed them exactly how crap oreos really are.

You can SO not judge American chocolate by a Babe Ruth candy bar. I am appalled at the very suggestion.

Did they have Dove? Ghiradelhi? (And also I will admit to a sneaking love of the dark chocolate Milky Way bars, but that is another discussion entirely and will end up making me look very bad, so never mind.)

we have dove chocolate over here, actually.

however, as someone else mentioned, american chocolate is made differently. i've heard this for years and never put much thought into it, but the difference is immediate. it was a bit shocking. i kept eating, waiting for the chocolate goodness to hit me but it never came.

i think i should send you some chocolate.

This sounds like the sort of situation that would call for much experimentation and much travelling back and forth between the U.S. and Australia and much shipping and much chocolate eating.

I approve of all of this.

i wonder how easy it is to post chocolate to the US?

anyhow, emails soon. i've got a bunch of marking to do, which i'm behind in, and everything has fallen of schedule once again. the word you're looking for for me is slacker.

Three months living in Seattle was enough to convince me that US chocolate is icky. Even their Cadbury bars don't taste right - I blame it on replacing cane sugar with high-frustose corn syrup.

Which brings me to another observation - don't drink coke in Adelaide, unless it's from a can or a bottle. Anything made up on the spot with syrup is almost guaranteed to use Adelaide water. Now, I kinda like Adelaide water, having grown up on the stuff (hmm..maybe that explains my lack of height) but.. urgh.

I have tasted of the american chocolate on a trip to NYC. Several of us did. Cue the whole group getting weird looks outside the deli one girl bought it from as we spat and made gagging noises and chugged our water bottles.

And yet, they manage to make decent chocolate ice cream. HOW????
