I read an interview with Assange the other day, in which he noted that Wikileaks is often connected to computer hacking, and not journalism or publishing. "There’s a deliberate attempt to redefine what we’re doing not as publishing," Assange said, "which is protected in many countries, or the journalist activities, which is protected in other ways, as something which doesn’t have a protection, like computer hacking, and to therefore split us off from the rest of the press and from these legal protections. It’s done quite deliberately by some of our opponents. It’s also done because of fear, from publishers like The New York Times that they’ll be regulated and investigated if they include our activities in publishing and journalism."

Agree or not, I actually spent some time thinking about how the latest leaks have been reported as damaging, an act of terrorism, and not actual journalism. I tend to side with Assange, and I find what he is doing to be interesting, and perhaps even important to how we, especially in the Western World, view our governments and media. Still, whatever your opinion, it's an interesting event taking place before us.

Have you read Glenn Greenwald's column on Wikileaks from Salon?

It's awfully interesting how sanguine our government is about American calls to assassinate one of our citizens, isn't it? Shows just how valuable citizenship is.
