The New PM

So, yes, we have a female Prime Minister now. Our first female Prime Minister, which is cool, but would certainly be cooler if she was different to all the other political beasts out there. Still, it's good to see on a number of levels.

However, like Lynda Hawryluk, I await this:

Every time PM Julia Gillard does something wrong, it will be because she's a woman and too emotional or irrational, and the first putdown when she does something wrong it will be because she doesn't have any kids so what could she know about running a country.

And anytime she does something right, it will be because she's a woman and that's about it.

And if/when the old farts say that stupid old shit I hope the younger ones will groan very fucking loudly, roll their eyes and say "get thee to a fucking nursing home old man, you are no longer relevant".

I believe I shall adopt this policy forthwith.

When it's explicit, it's easy to deal with like that. Much of it won't be, though. Just about every female leader I can think of except Thatcher has been victim to the "Madonna or whore" syndrome. Once it becomes clear that they are not perfect, they are vilified and hounded out. Public expectations of women to not allow for minor character flaws. And as for Thatcher, it was always said that she played as a man - so perhaps that's why she escaped it.
