Jesus Fuck

I went out to put washing on the line about a little bit ago, and I'm standing there, pinning sheets in the sun, when I glance up--

--Jesus, but I'm still not quite sure what it's doing in that web.

Feb. 11th, 2010 03:59 am (UTC)
i dare say that that is pretty accurate for being life size. a little bit more maybe, i dunno, but the thing is huge. utterly fucking huge and grey and with what looks to be meals on wheels behind it.

I'm pretty sure those are all the inedible bits of its previous meals that are lined up there behind it. It's saying 'Uuuurp.'

At least it's harmless. For your arachnaphobic sake I hope she hasn't set up house because she's expecting.

yeah, i suspected as much--the expecting bit, not that i knew what it was.

The webs usually only last a few hours - the spider puts them up and then takes them down again (when I say 'takes them down', I mean eats and recycles them.

I think this one is going to have a wee bit of trouble recycling all this!

Just think, you have a zillion poisonous spiders to choose from down there, and you got something harmless. That's pretty lucky!

Well, yes, and I probably would have shrieked like a banshee.

I was, however, waiting for one of your US friends to say 'you were doing what with your sheets now?' as hanging out laundry is virtually unknown here.

Hurrr...I still don't want one...
Note:

The venom of the Golden silk orb-weaver is potent but not lethal to humans. It has a neurotoxic effect similar to that of the black widow spider; however, its venom is not nearly as powerful. The bite causes local pain, redness, and blisters that normally disappear within a 24-hour interval. In rare cases, it might trigger allergic reactions and result in respiratory troubles (in asthmatics) or fast-acting involuntary muscle cramps. As the genus possesses relatively strong chelicera, the bite could leave a scar on hard tissue (such as fingers).

Re: Hurrr...I still don't want one...
hmm. dont most Nephilae kill their prey via constriction and crushing rather than venom? my sources say so. my experience of them are only of maculata and antipodiana. but in general non agressive. and will not pursue trespassers ie humans

On seeing that pictire, I started singing, I once had a girl, or should I say she once had me.

It's not altogether clear why...
