Black Sheep in Exams in Germany?

Yesterday, I was left a comment on my blog by Lisa, who I assume is German. She said, "Hey Ben!!!

Do you know that your book Black Sheep was chosen for the German final examinations. Sounds kind of interesting. I think I am going to buy it to read the whole book. Hope I did well in analysing the scene.

Good luck for your career, Lisa."

I had no idea. Anyone else heard this?

I'd be curious to see what scene they used, and if it was translated into German, and how that happened, and if anyone was contacted about it. Hell, I just got no idea what's going on. Perhaps another Ben Peek wrote another Black Sheepand it is him.

I found a German woman on MySpace called Cat Sparks. Weird shit seems to be afoot in Germany...
Apr. 29th, 2009 01:55 am (UTC)
you always find women called cat sparks on the web. personally, i think you stalk them and then assume their identity...
Apr. 29th, 2009 01:58 am (UTC)
well, of course I do! who wouldn't?
Apr. 29th, 2009 02:00 am (UTC)
cat spark?

(you know, without the subtle plural indication of your evil)
Apr. 29th, 2009 02:01 am (UTC)
nah, its all about the plural
Apr. 29th, 2009 02:49 am (UTC)
It was this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0779982/ She said 'scene'. Lol.
Apr. 29th, 2009 02:53 am (UTC)
heh. she did say 'book' tho.
Apr. 29th, 2009 02:56 am (UTC)
It was probably photocopied into a book for the students. Or it's a translation thing. She definitely means a film about psycho sheep.

Don't ruin my joke!

*grumbles* lol.
Apr. 29th, 2009 02:56 am (UTC)
don't ruin my german fame!

Apr. 29th, 2009 04:42 am (UTC)
How disappointing! That was exciting for five minutes!
Apr. 29th, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)
nah, it's not the film, i don't think. it might actually still be the book.
Apr. 29th, 2009 04:50 am (UTC)
She did say she wanted to buy the book. You'd someone would have let you know. Who was the publisher again? Oh.
Apr. 29th, 2009 05:20 am (UTC)
how does this happen to you? is there an educational literary god that is perched on your shoulder casting spells at foreign institutions saying 'study this man, may it serve you well.'

this will mean that your fame will be guaranteed after your death. until then, sheesh, things could be tough on the fame and money front...

it's probably the film but.
Apr. 30th, 2009 12:41 am (UTC)
yeah, it's pretty cool, hey? though i often wonder how these people are coming by the books...

you're probably right about the film, tho.
Apr. 29th, 2009 07:34 am (UTC)

No one goes to my blog really anyhow, but those that do are looking for you, not me :)

Hey Ben,

Is there a way that I can get in contact with you? The link to contact you dosen't seem to be working? I left my email on your benpeek.com site. Thanks!

Hey ^^ I'm from germany and I actually chose that exam...
we had 2 to decide and I chose this one xDD

We had an extract about Iaso dazai from when he said that he was found guilty until the segregator said 'get him changed'

We had to analyze that part... but let me ask.. are YOU actually Ben Peek? xDD
I just googled and wanted to find out whether I analyzed it the right way xDDD and then I read that you had LJ (and I have it to so I though i could read xD) and... yes xDD

please answer me ^^

ah and... it was and english exam, so nobody translated it ^^
May. 1st, 2009 12:15 am (UTC)
yeah, i'm that ben peek.

so what kind of exam was it? just an english speaking one?
May. 1st, 2009 10:03 am (UTC)
Uhm... no. Like... the final exams here are like... you hav 3 subjects in which you have to write an exam, and one is an oral exam. So I had to write an english exam.
It's like that:
You have a text, in this case an extract from your novel. The you have task 1,2,3a and 3b.
1 is comprehension with introductory sentence, topicsentence blabla. 2 is analysis where you have to look for the rethorical devices and stuff and 3a was a comment( i chose 3a). We had to compare the totalitarian state in the exract to multiculturalism today and we had to write something about a movie we have seen in class, east is east. ^^
May. 1st, 2009 11:34 pm (UTC)

that's cool, though i think the fact that my book was in an exam might make it lame now. heh.

Black Sheep in German Abitur
Dear Mr Peek,
I'm an English teacher correcting the exams on your book at the moment.

The exact questions were:

1. Outline the protagonist's situation, his crime and the consequences as presented in the extract from the novel.

2. Analyse the way the totalitarian state is portrayed in this excerpt from the novel Black Sheep. Consider narrative perpsective, atmosphere, interaction and language.

3.1 In this future state "Multiculturalism [is seen as] a most heinous crime" (l. 13). Against the background of this view discuss the problems and chances of multiculturalism. Refer to your knowledge of multicultural societies today and to the film "East is East".

3.2 A publishing house is planning an anthology of dystopian literature. Write a letter to the person in charge in which you recommend this extract as an excellent example of a dystopian text. Support your views with your knowledge of dystopian literature and current events.

Re: Black Sheep in German Abitur

btw, am i wrong in thinking that the abitur is the final exam of year 12 in germany?

Re: Black Sheep in German Abitur
yes, you are wrong. It's the final exam after year 13. Normally, pupils have studied English then for 9 years.
