Australia should refuse to allow migrants or refugees with HIV to enter the country, Prime Minister John Howard has said.

Mr Howard said there may be special cases when an exemption could be considered but as a rule HIV-positive people should be denied entry.

Mr Howard was asked about the issue during a visit to Victoria state, which has seen a sharp rise in HIV cases.

...

Victoria's public health officials have blamed the rise in HIV cases partly on overseas immigrants, but also on Australian residents relocating from other parts of the country.

Okay, so the gay community moved to Melbourne, too.

As you can plainly see, however, Australia is not at all run by a bunch of inhumane racists. No. Not at all. Perish the thought.

I find an odd comfort in knowing that not all of the inhumane racists are here in amerika.

It's great when one has the luxury of not being potentially infected with AIDS.

There are two broad groups: those who know and those who don't know.

One can certainly understand that those who don't know that they're infected are not acting in bad faith. Depending on the spread of infection one may have to induce everyone to be tested on an ongoing basis.

Then there are those who are infected which can be divided into two groups. Those who are not trying to infect others and those who are (they don't care). Unfortunately, it's a real problem trying to distinguish between the two.

There is no friendly solution. Those who are infected may try and to varying levels succeed in not infecting others. But accidents can happen and AIDS continues to be a death sentence. The international community should build a city and relocate the AIDS folk there. Once folk are cured then allow them to leave. It has to be more than an international relocation effort. It needs to be an international research effort. Having as much of the infected population as possible in one city (well I should say cities) [one geographic area] should assist with research.

i think banning people with AIDS is just ridiculous--and targeting of minority groups. as the health board says, AIDS is not a problem in this country, and it's not an air born contagious disease. i'm sure someone will suggest that one city idea, though--it happens in different ways all round.

It's a stupid rule if looked at from the perspective of health risk. Slightly less stupid if you consider the disproportionate strain on the health system. I still disagree with it though.

it's easy to disagree with.

Yes, it is. I suppose you have to consider whether there are any aspects of personal history, or any traits at all that justify exclusion from a country.

Ban the Interstate Immigrants!!
Damn them, coming to Victoria and taking our jobs and our women and .......

I didn't know much about John Howard before we moved here and now I'm in the position where he scares me stupid. Mind you Mr Tanuja heard him admit that he structured his childcare policies to make it more difficult for working mothers, since he thinks that a mother's place is in the home (I suspect with that attitude that his wife has a chain that allows her to go from the kitchen to the bedroom and no further). As a potential working mother, that attitude really fucks me off. I am a very good at finance, it's a profession I've trained and studied for. I'm an okay mother - my son loves me and that's good. What I am not, is a good teacher, I don't have the patience or the first idea how to teach him to read.

Sorry, minor rant over. Now where were we? Oh, yes, damn those interstate immigrants......
