Drugs Are Good For You

I think those mean harm ratings are way out of whack. Amphetamines should be much higher, for example - makes people psychotic and violent, in addition to the health damage inflicted on the user and the issues of addiction itself. And solvents less than cannabis? I've known people with major cannabis habits who seem moderately productive, and I've known people with major cannabis habits who eventually gave the drug up and are none the worse for their years spent stoned on the couch watching daytime TV - whereas solvents lead to serious brain damage in short order. Perhaps its the idiot convention I have seen in some of the drug literature of throwing (fairly safe) nitrous oxide in with (incredibly damaging) butane etc at work.

But the point remains much the same - the level of 'harm' has very little correlation to illegality.

Yeah, solvents jumped out at me, too. Agreed.

But a nice graph in any case.

But what's the scoring system. Out of 3? Out of 5? Out of 10?

Where 5=instant death and 3=hangover ?

yeah, i'm not sure about that. i snagged the graph of a different blog, and haven't been able to track down the original source.

Interesting to note where Alcohol and Tobacco fall in relation to Cannabis. I'm surprised LSD is so low on the list, given the hours-long effects, hallucinations, etc. Anyway, some interesting stuff here.

i've always known alcohol and tobacco was more damaging that other drugs--i know more people with alcohol problems than i do drug ones, and i've seen a lot more people get fucked up on it. but then everyones mileage varies.

Acid is out of the body pretty quickly. People have taken massive doses, several thousand mikes and more, and experienced no ill effects. The damage that can be done, if any, is psychological. People with a weak sense of identity, you know, tend to be vulnerable to bad trips. Drugs are good for you if they're good for you -- certain people have remarkable tolerances for heroin. I had a bass player who chipped pretty regularly and never had a problem. Some people can't do 'em at all and turn to jesus. Go figure.

yeah, it's all for whoever you are. i just figure we can all do with a little less demonisation.
