Australian Idol winner Damien Leith has signed a book deal with HarperCollins for his debut novel to be released this year.

Leith, who wrote the fictional story before he won Idol last year, now has a chance to top the music and book sales charts in the same year.

Leith said the first prints of his novel were due for general release in October.

"It's insane, it's an incredible feeling," said Leith, who sent his manuscript to HarperCollins publisher Linda Funnell before entering Australian Idol last year.

"I wrote before I ever did music; I wrote plays, I tried to write loads and loads of different books. I did that for years. It's just weird that all these years later the music has taken off and now suddenly this comes along as well. I've got to pinch myself," he said.

Leith's manuscript was first passed to Ms Funnell by a mutual friend, who met the singer while he was an unknown artist performing at the Balmain Bowling Club.

Said mutual friend, after Leith won Australian Idol, "Remember that book I gave you? He just won Australian Idol! I don't care if you hated it! Read it the fuck again!'

I don't know where this cynicism comes from.

Heh. Perhaps I will find fame with the made up band More Machine Now Than Man, and then get a book deal?

A friend of mine (who worked as a receptionist at the film company I used to work at) was on Pop Idol, the UK original, and did pretty well. She'd previously been in a film with some chick off Neighbours, but since then has been working as a shopping tv girl, and a quick google of her name reveals that the top result is an "up-skirt alert"!

I guess it's not glamma [sic.] and Pulitzers for all?

You can be in it if you want. I think Hal Duncan's going to be? Or maybe we'll just have Vellum set up as a religion that one of the band members converts to. Apparently we're very famous for setting a dwarf on fire during a live show? Controversy always sells.

Purely rock n' roll. Not the music, just the lifestyle!

The Cult of Glass Teat Celebrity rules.

I have to ask: have you looked at the book yet? If so, what's the writing like?

It seems out of character for you to complain about this type of thing. I thought you were into bringing the pain to your fellow aspiring writers in terms of the harsh and cynical realities of the publishing industry and the fact that good work is continually overlooked in favour of things that are easily saleable, like fame and sex appeal.

Anyway, maybe his book's good and it's finally getting the attention it deserves. Maybe.

No thanks. Although, to be fair, it might be as good as the average unpublished novel.

Not at all ... after all, you seem to be publishing one or two of yours.

I just mean that the average person seeing that Damien Leith's getting his (probably shit) novel published and complaining about the injustice of the universe quite probably hasn't written a better one ...

Harper fucking Collins. Well, there you go then.

I'm sure it's a rip snorter of a book if his music cred is anything to go buy. I hope there's some serious anal fucking in it, maybe some dismemberment, the occasional rape scene, drug and animal abuse - preferably together - the foul mouth of an Irish man, and no happy ending.

Am I allowed to be this vitriolic on your blog, Ben?
