Sale

Sold my story 'Possession' to Sean Wallace (oldcharliebrown) and Paul Tremblay (pgtremblay) at Fantasy Magazine.

It is, I'm sure it'll surprise you, a red sun story. The fourth, and second to Fantasy. The story is about two women, one who lives in a giant hole that runs through the earth, and the second who falls into it. I got the idea for it from this picture:

Can you explain the red sun story thing? I think I've read two of them so far and am not sure i see the connection
benpeek
Jan. 5th, 2007 01:07 am (UTC)
there is no connection, except that they're all set in a world with a red sun. 'blackbirds' is set pretty much on a different continent that the others are, but yeah, the connection is just the world.

Thanks for sending us the story.

Don't step in that hole, you might turn your ankle or something similarly painful.

Hole
Good place for a hole.

Seeing that picture sort of inspired me to wrote something as well, but I don't know what the fuck it is, yet. Too busy writing about Nicaragua, in particular the town of Chichigalpa. The town's owned by the richest man in Nicaragua, and everyone's got this "environmental" disease. We went there to film a man's death. He was dying of the same disease everyone in the town is dying of. Came in at night. Frightened faces peering at us through the windows of little houses. Spookyville. The man we filmed died about two hours after we got there. One of the hardest things I've ever done, sitting through it. Hard not to feel you're exploiting him, hard not to feel it now that I'm writing about it. But he wanted us there, wanted us to show what happened. Anyway, the richest man in Nicaragua has a lot to answer for.

Re: Hole
that sounds like a hard thing, that. i totally get the whole exploiting thing, but i guess if he wanted you there, he kind of wants it out and talked about. still, man. hard. best with it, and all.

there should be more stories set in giant holes, though. i keep looking at the picture and wondering if i captured the sheer hugeness of it, now. plus, i get an email from a friend whose dad worked in it--wild, huh? anyhow: i'll be interested to see what you do with the hole, man. same with the nicaragua piece.

Oarsome!

So are these forming the background to a novel or anything?

benpeek
Jan. 5th, 2007 10:15 am (UTC)
i don't know. the novel isn't set anywhere near these short stories--its set in a really dry, empty, hellish place, with transported criminals and the such. i'm sure you can pick what i'm playing off.

this red sun stuff is just odd. who knew there'd be four, and novel? fuck'd if i did. i just begin typing and there it is. figure it'll dry up soon enough.
