The Day Youth Left

Yes, today is my birthday. Yes, I am now thirty. Yes, obviously suicide is the answer.

Above is an image of what I have named the Propaganda Dolls. They're from a Russian kids program that tells everyone that Stalin was brilliant, and that they ought to over throw the West and rule in the old Party Way of Blood and Show Trials, or so I understand it. They're from S, who is too cool for school. She's probably at school right now because she's, like, ten, and has youth, whereas mine is now Officially Gone. Note the capitals.

Anyhow, last year I did a thing where everyone came and told me the good things in their day, as opposed to just wishing me a happy birthday. Same deal: tell me good things. Share the love.

Many happy returns.

I had no idea people even lived that long! Tell us about the olden days, uncle Ben ;)

Happy birthday! I have nothing terribly positive to report, aside from the fact that tomorrow is Friday. Perhaps I'd be more excited about that if I wasn't working all day Saturday?

Good things? Jeez, a bit early in the day for much good to have happened... though I am eating home-made muffins right now, so that's one good thing I suppose.

Your 30s are a good time. A good mix of youthfulness and wisdom. It was only when I hit 40 that I started to actually feel a bit old.

Well, all right then.

Today I'm celebrating my unbirthday by writing. I've an interview with DJ Yoda to write up -- I got through the whole thing without a single lame Star Wars reference, yes, I'm proud -- and a couple of reviews. I'm reviewing Lost Girls, Alan Moore's pornographic graphic novel, and I think I'll reread it today before making a definite opinion. Most of his work benefits from a second read.

So that's my good day: reading porn, writing stuff.
benpeek
Oct. 12th, 2006 02:48 am (UTC)
well, i have to give you props for not making a star wars reference. i wouldn't have resisted, and probably would have written the whole thing in yoda speak.

i liked LOST GIRLS. it was graphically quite beautiful, but a bit light on the story.

Happy birthday you. Gosh, I'm glad I didn't get the your youth is officially gone memo on my thirtieth, or I might have, I dunno started acting all old and responsible or something. Maybe it's still lost in the post, along with my telegram rom the Queen. Hey! Speaking of which, my auntie turned 100 last year. The Queen doesn't do telegrams anymore, but my auntie did get a card. Probably read, "Thank you for being an old fart." Have fun.

I had a bad day yesterday where I doubted my superhuman powers as a teacher. Today, one of my students decided to give me a snack to cheer me up. It was embarassing but the gesture was nice. I've also been brainwashing my class, playing Oasis and Crowded House songs as part of "listening activities". So that is kinda cool.

30 is good. People now take you seriously, particularly on a professional level. Yoou've learnt what matters in life and what isn't important. You've successfully got past peak ages for suicide, depression and onset of schizophrenia. You've had time to grow comfortable in your own skin.

Happy Birthday, Ben! You're not old. 30 is the new 20. (It must be, because I've heard that 40 is the new 30.) And you might not even start to feel old until you're say, 46. Then the Alzheimers sets in. But as far as I remember, being 30 was good.

oh, I almost forgot.
