Is this just about the most unflattering photo you've seen of a bunch of authors? I mean, really, who takes this shit? Haldeman looks drunk, the guy accepting for Joss Whedon looks like he went to the wrong award show and someone just told him this isn't the Oscars ("Ohmyfuckinggod, I'm in the room with sci-fi authors!") and Ellison looks as if he's just been revived after a thousand years in cryogenic suspension and told that he can only get work writing Star Trek scripts but has to share partial cred with William Shatner's head.

It's the age of digital photography, people, how hard is it to wait until everyone is ready and Holly Black has her eyes open before you take the shot?

it's certainly a bit shocking, isn't it? he's not looking well at all in that photo.

Actually, I'm wondering where Bill Nolan's put his trophy...

Although Ellison's certainly got the Innsmouth Look happening. Good spot there.

Is Ellison the Emperor Palpatine lookalike on the far right? Christ.

It's an awful photograph, and the thing is, it's par for the course in sf author photography, which I think is Ben's point.
You're right, it's a crying shame. Is the whole sf field like this? Not really. I mean... not really, not that much. *sigh*

what i don't get is that it's not hard to take a better photo that this, but yet, you know, while this one is certainly bad, i've seen others like it. you think they'd hire a professional photographer to cover it.

I figured Ellison was probably dead if he actually accepted the Grandmaster from SFWA and showed up in Tempe for the ceremonies. I see by the picture thathe is now, like Keith Richard, an animated corpse. Not only that, but he's morphing into Truman Capote.

Haldeman was probably sober, but most likely thrashed and not entirely happy about going through the awards and post-awards shit. I remember him being more the type to bolt for a quiet spot rather than dealwith glad-handing swarms.

hilarious.

Still, the more people you've got in a photo, the harder it will be to get them to look good, especially after four margaritas and a rum and coke.

:) It's a tradition in SF to take ugly photos of authors. I didn't even realise that the photo unflatters most of them until you pointed it out.

Ellen Datlow has some pretty good photos of the same event, here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35025258@N00/sets/72057594131955774/

Looks like Joe's eyes pretty much were half-closed the whole time. I think that's just how his eyes are.

There's a good photo of Ellison, too.

yeah, i saw them. ellison doesn't look nearly as ill as he does in those locus photos. maybe it's the suit ;)

ellen should hire herself out for the functions. editor/photographer.

The Locus photographer is Beth Gwinn, who can take some pretty great photos. The problem seems to be that Locus picks the ones they want to run. It's kind of a standing joke amongst authors who've had photos in Locus.
