My Paperweight Art.

I know many of you are curious, and indeed, jealous, of my paperweight, so I thought I would share.

I call it, PaperWeight (Symbolic Gesture About Doctorate that Looks like Literary Award; Made From Glass, Mass Produced and Kept in Piles in the Closet, It Awaits You). Which is kinda longish, and I should really shorten it down some. Still.

Look at in from a different angle - you have a mighty fine murder weapon there.

"It was Mr Peek, in the Library, with the Paperweight."

Right, sorry Dr Peek.

But wait, here comes Sir Tessa, in the Kitchen, with the Cake Fork!

And cake!

Then I eat cake.

Look, it's a lovely paperweight. I got a Swiss army knife with my doctorate, which was mighty brave of my committee, but paperweight's good too.
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 03:21 am (UTC)
a swiss army knife, huh? did it come with the cork screw and such? cause if it came with the whole lot, and was once of those swish knives, i think you might be the winner of 'things i got when i handed in my doctorate' poll.
squirrel_monkey
Mar. 9th, 2006 03:27 am (UTC)
Yep, the real deal -- corkscrew and everything. What did I win? (And don't say, "Paperweight".)
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 03:31 am (UTC)
um. i have this classy black box that the paperweight came in?
squirrel_monkey
Mar. 9th, 2006 03:33 am (UTC)
Will a knife fit into it?
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 03:38 am (UTC)
yes, i imagine so. even one of those classy, mgyver style swiss army knives.

Well I didn't get anything when I got my PhD... ah wait a minute I haven't took one have I?

Giving a monkey a knife is a bit dangerous isn't it, especially if it doesn't have a black box?

It's bootiful. You have to work here for 20 years (possibly 25) before they give you a hunk of rock.
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 05:50 am (UTC)
wow.

mine only took me four years. maybe you get a better kind of rock than me. mine is glass, after all.

Mar. 9th, 2006 05:37 am (UTC)
Huh. Even the same university that I got my degree from. I wonder whether they were introduced in the last few years or whether they just weren't afforded to those of us based at outlying campuses.
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 05:47 am (UTC)
i believe i'm one of the first people to have one. guy i know who submitted at the end of last year didn't have one--and my supervisor was talking about how before that, there was nothing.
exp_err
Mar. 9th, 2006 05:50 am (UTC)
Ah! So it's a collector's piece! If you do another PhD, do you get a blue one?
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 05:51 am (UTC)
maybe when i hand in the final version to the library they give me a matching piece?

Mar. 9th, 2006 05:39 am (UTC)
I call it, PaperWeight... I should really shorten it down some.

How about calling it "Glam Rock"?
benpeek
Mar. 9th, 2006 05:51 am (UTC)
no. i want it to be a dignified paperweight.

They had something similar when I worked at Citibank. They gave them out as 'Service Excellence' awards. Need I add these were very nearly immediately known as the SEX awards?

You'll have to come up with a nifty acronym (you're a writer, after all!) because SGADTLLLAMFGMPAKIPITCIAY is just too hard to pronouce.
