the thing about no standing signs is that someone has gone insane with them in Westmead.

they sit, not only in the middle of strips of curb outside apartment blocks (which is an acceptable place, for buses), but also on the edges of curbs, thus cutting off that last parking space and leaving a dead area that serves no point. it's a strange thing to come across: all these perfect parking spaces, lined by curb grey cement, but cursed by the red sign that points out, claiming that here is a No Standing Zone.

(and i picked tom waits's 9th and Hennepin spoken word, because it's got a wonderful description of the street. my favourite line is 'the steam comes out of the grill like the whole place is ready to blow'.)
