Observation #711

If you give a group of individuals name badges, they will place the white plastic strip with their name, one after the other, on the left side of their chest, next to their heart. Age, gender, and ethnicity won't matter. After they have done that, they will then sit and wait patiently, as if they were seven and sitting in a classroom before a teacher during those years of pigtails and scabs and lost teeth.

That's true.
I even put my magnetic namebadge I wear every day on the left-hand side. This causes my some grief, since the embroidered logo on my shirt is also on that side, and finding a spot that is neither too high nor too low without obscuring the fabulous logo is quite difficult.

However, I don't sit quietly unless it is a paper namebadge and I'm on PD or some such...

i noticed this at a market research thing tonight.

i also noticed that if you place your name badge elsewhere, it will confuse people. they will ask you why you don't have it on properly.

I've taken to wearing my gummint badge on my hip. Which is less to do with social conditioning, and more to do with the fact that I wear the same belt every day, and thus won't forget said badge.

that's very federal agent like of you (for some reason i just have this image of fox mulder wearing it--i wonder if he had one belt?).

the more abstract the place you have the name tag, the better. my personal favorite is on my shoes. knee high boots work better than runners. but the belt is a good place too. and wearing it upside down. and yes i do have a juvenile obsession with doing things wrong. i think if i had been a little more rebellious when i was a child this wouldn't be happening.

i once put a name tag on the soul of my boot. every time someone asked, i lifted it up.

there remembered pretty quickly.

It's simply because most people are right handed. Nothing more poetic than that.

well, sure, but where's the fun in that? wouldn't you rather the poetic world where people do it ot attach names to their heart in a symbolic assertion of their life?

Perhaps it's just the circumstance that most often results in people wearing name tags that makes me feel that no-one should seek to self-identify on such a deep level with such a situation. =P

I prefer the medical approach in times like this. Cold, clear, professional and distant.

i prefer the one that allows me not to think about why i'm there :)
