Anything but the Whitlams.

Do you ever wonder what it'll be like to hear a Pope pronounce his own words?

Just a thought for the day, really. The main reason for this post is that I'm currently hunting for Australian music that doesn't get much exposure. It's related to A Walking Tour of the Dreaming City. The only criteria is that I'm looking for bands and musicians who are lyrically interesting. If you know a few, speak up. It'll be appreciated.

*Sigh* That's me and helping out whilst doing maths. You could try Jet, or Killing Heidi. And that's about all I know of Australian Bands.

Anything but the John Butler Trio. Man, I hate that guy. Not sure why.

i like their stuff, personally.

though, you know, i can see the annoying side of him. in interviews and such, he comes across as a bit of a hippy preaching loser. i mean, i like him him and all, but when there is an interview, i just switch channels. maybe it's the hat thing he wears.

however, that said, they put on an excellent live gig.

2 woodford's ago...
i tried to strike up a conversation with John Butler reguarding the brilliance of the tobacco-peddling tee-pee beside me that he was obviously admiring the construction of. he just didn't respond. he looked at me, i think he understood, but he didn't say anything. a short while later he wandered over to my coffee stand and ordered 2 soy lattes. again an attempt at communication and again i was blown off. it's not like i was asking him for an autograph on my genitals, it's not like i even acknowledged that i even knew who he was. it was just meat and potatoes conversation that i tried to strike up between 2 human beings, and he blew me off the arrogant fuck. so when his coffee was ready i yelled "Mr Butler! your coffee is ready!" really really loudly. needless to say, he was swarmed by annoying fans shortly there-after.

No, I have no useful suggestions. Sorry.

Except...how about Frente? They rock(ed). "Accidentally Kelly Street, where friends and strangers sometimes meet" - now that's a lyric.

Let's just say, if you supply the baby, I'll supply the flesh...

Augie March. people either love them or hate them but lyrically they are brilliant. kind of Jeff buckly meets sonic youth at a rodeo.

then of course there is my band, but we don't really have a name yet. infact we haven't recorded anything worth mentioning so far. we have written a large handful of tunes, but they are mostly being workshopped at this stage and are therefore pretty much instrumental.

other bands that are Australian but not necesarily lyrically interesting/lacking exposure.

Spiderbait, Tumbleweed, The Meanies (who have since died and spawned The Tomorrow People and Even), Magic Dirt, something for Kate, Rebecca's empire, The Black Eyed Susan's (there are an awful lot of bands who mentions girls names aren't there?), You Am I, the Sleepy Jackson, Little Birdy, Grimoire, Darth Vegas, Butterfingers, Powderfinger, Regurgitator, Machinegun Fellatio, The Mavis's, Cat Empire, The Grates (who sound a lot like the unicorns), Shuriken (?SPELLING?), Xavier Rudd (even tho he's based in Canada), Resin dogs... blah, blah, blah and blah, blah, the list goes on, but is as far as i can stretch it at this time of day

i'm not an augie march fan, got to say. what little i've heard hasn't caught me.

i lot of those bands i'd heard. i'll have to check the ones i haven't, so thanks. (and it's been ages since i heard anyone reference tumbleweed. they did some alright stuff.)

tumbleweed were my most seen band for a while there. i don't know what happened to them.

Augie March are definatly an acquired taste. not a raving fan myself, but Glenn's lyrics intruige me. i may be bias too. i grew up in the same town as that band did and hung with his sister for a few years. as is often the case: their old stuff is better than their new stuff.
