Australia Day.

It's Australia Day today. The official occupation date. The official day the prison opened. People get all worked up for it, actually, and in some cases they take the Australian flag and wear it like a cape.

Still, even they wonder what cunt came up with that ball hanging off the Harbour Bridge.

thank you. I saw Australia Day on the calendar today and wondered what it was.

yeah, it's the day of our little country. *shrug* doesn't mean all that much to me, personally, but other folk get behind it.

...and some get behind it with a cape.

I like the new design, by the way (of your site, not my cape). The old brown was nice, but the black text was a bit hard to read.

well, some poeple like capes. me... i'm not a cape person. capes get you into trouble. i saw THE INCREDIBLES.

thanks on the new look. it's been like that for a while now, but i felt the need to change. change is one of those good things at times.

Hm...I haven't seen The Incredibles, so I'll have to take your word for it.

Hey, I liked your comments on Drinking Coffee Elsewhere. I've read the first three stories; they kicked ass - especially the first one. I suppose I should read the rest one day; it's been sitting on my desk for ages (under Stephen King's "Firestarter", which has a surly-looking...shit, can't remember her name - anyway, the chick who played the girl in the movie is on it. Surrounded by flames. It's very pulpish; I like it).

THE INCREDIBLES is worth seeing, i reckon. it's fun.

i can't read king, myself, but i think i know that cover. i'm planning to read more of packer's collection, but my copy of murakami's KAFKA ON THE SHORE arrived today, and i'm off to see the polyphonic spree tonight...

i got to get back to writing soon. since that workshop, everything has just gone straight to hell.

That's what redlantern2051's been saying...maybe I'll drag the girlfriend along to it on Friday.

So when's your ETA for "The Dreaming City"?

you know, for the longest time i thought you and laternman were the same person. i think it was those early posts you made in his livejournal that did it.

anyhow, yeah, take the girlfriend. she'll hate you less ;)

i'm figuring, finish up on thesis around july/august. i hope to have a readable draft of the novel by the end of feb, but at this stage, it's looking somewhat impossible, so i think it'll be somewhere in march.

No, he's my flatmate. I steal his computer from time to time (actually quite frequently) because mine is old, and infested with spyware. That first post was the only time I've inadvertently posed as him - all the other times were the real redlantern. (Otherwise known simply as "Dave".)

Hmm...well, good luck with the thesising. Who's marking it? Is it whatsisname - tall skinny Asian dude with deep booming voice?

yeah, i figured it eventually. his music obsessions aren't what i'd pick for you ;)

as for markers... man, i got no idea. i haven't even thought about it. i'm not much fussed, to be honest. if i get a phd or don't... *shrug* it's not why i signed up. it'd be good from a teaching angle, but that's about all.

well, and the amusement of being a dr.

Ha ha, yeah...he does have some unusual tastes.

Hm...yes, it would be cool to be a doctor, wouldn't it. Personally I was happy enough to finish my BA.

Swing me a few chapters when you're done. :)

well, personally, i look forward to be able to say, 'yes, i am a dr, no i'm not a criminal,' in job interviews. it's been years since the last happened, but oddly, years since i had a proper job interview.

a few chapters. bah. a few chapters do not show my footnoting genius.

well, maybe they do.

come april, however, you should be able to buy 'the dreaming city', which is the first chapter, in aus.

Well, you do have a suspicious criminal look about you. So I understand how mistakes like that can occur.

But tell me, Dr Crime...where is chapter 1 being published? I will buy it.

Erm...no footnotes in chapter 1? Hey, I've been reading "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel", which is heavily footnoted. Not sure if it's a good thing yet.

yes, criminal me. bah.

anyhow, chapter one got published in a ook in the states called LEVIATHAN 4: CITIES, but it's going to be reprinted in THE YEARS BEST AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY, which i figure might be of more interest to you.

and yeah, it is footnoted. but not like clarke.
