sydney was named after lord sydney, who gave arthur philip, retired and a basic nonentity in naval history, the job. tim flannery claims that sydney, 'as a secretary of state for the home department [he] was an incompetent bureaucrat, unequal to the most ordinary of duties in his office'.

sydney harbour was known as cadi by the eora, and the tribe that lived around there was known as the cadigaleans. it's a pity we didn't adopt the name cadi, or even cadigaleans for the city, which translates to people of the harbour.

it's a nicer word, too.
