The surface of the planet Mars is seen in this undated photo from the U.S. space agency NASA. An Australian geologist said on August 4, 2003 that giant ice towers formed by steaming volcanic vents may be the best place to look for life on Mars, rather than the gullies which some speculate may have been gouged by running water.
